Media Center and Library

The Osaka City University Media Center was inaugurated in October 1996 and is located in the central part of the university's Sugimoto campus. The Media Center has the unique distinction of being amongst the first integrated complexes comprised of a library, computer and education facility to be established in Japan. The Media Center houses a collection of over 2.5 million books and approximately 9,000 current periodical titles and is one of the leading library facilities in Japan. The Media Center also functions as the nucleus of the campus network (OCUNET) and provides global Internet access.

11 Zones in Media Center

B3-2F: Deposit Zone

This space is for the storage of library materials.

B1F: Periodicals Zone

The main academic periodicals (current and back numbers) within the university are collected here. Users are also able to access online journals and e-newspapers.

1F: Cultural Exchange Zone

The 1st floor houses a cafeteria, exhibition corner, freely accessible study corner and a cultural exchange room often hosting university meetings or events.

2F: Reference Zone

Besides fulfilling the role of the general library service counter, this zone is also equipped with a good amount of reference books and access to online databases, offering a high-quality reference capacity.

3F-4F: Reading Zone

Here it is possible to freely peruse more than 200,000 volumes of academic and educational books.

5F: Multimedia Zone

On the 5th floor students can carry out group work or practice presentations in the flexibly designed Learning Commons space, use AV materials such CDs and DVDs or make use of one of the 120 computers in the PC room.

6F: Administration Zone

The Media Center's administrative facilities are located in this zone.

7F: Research and Reading Zone for Researchers

The Reading Zone for researchers, where the shelves are lined with often-used research books and the collections of which OCU is particularly proud of. This zone serves as an open reading room for people engaged in research.

8F: Rare Books Zone

In this zone, rare books and special collections of high academic value are stored and centrally administered, and individual research capabilities are supported.

9F: Information Processing Zone

This zone forms the nucleus of the university's IT network.

10F: Research and Exchange Zone

This zone has a conference room with a capacity of more than 250, regularly hosting international conferences and symposiums, and a comfortable meeting room specifically for researching staff.

Rooftop Garden

The Asteria Rooftop Garden offers a pleasant place to relax while enjoying the garden and a magnificent view of Osaka.

Research Staff

The specialization of the research staff of the Media Center encompasses four broad fields, namely Database and Multimedia Systems, Computing Systems, Network Systems and Library and Information Science. Research activities are mainly focused on the theoretical and technological aspects of informatics and their applications to natural, social and human sciences. The research staff conducts lectures and training sessions in the area of Information Processing and Computer Literacy. In addition, the research staff also supports the management of the Media Center's information infrastructure.

Weekdays:9:00?22:00 (open from 8:30 during class terms)
Saturdays: 10:00?19:00
Sundays: 10:00?17:00 (only during class terms)
Closed on National Holidays, for some time during the summer and spring holidays for inspection purposes and on Sundays outside class terms.
*Other closing dates or changes in opening hours will be announced via the website or message board.

Medical Library

There is a separate Medical Library at the Abeno Campus where the Faculty of Medicine, School of Nursing and University Hospital are located.
